Product Information
Our skin absorbs nutrients and expels toxins, so when we apply lotions, balms, or other products, we take in the ingredients! To keep your skin happy and healthy, we use all natural ingredients in many of our products. All of our products are made in small batches so they arrive fresh.*
To properly care for your handcrafted soap, please allow to dry between uses, use a soap dish, and store out of the direct spray of shower waters. This way, your soap will last much longer! We recommend you use our products within 6-12 months for the best results.

What Are "Natural" Products?
After researching the ingredients of so many of my favorite products, I decided to start making my own because many of the ingredients I saw were questionable even in so-called "natural" products. Some unhealthy but common ingredients in store-bought products are strong chemical preservatives. They are cost-effective for the manufacturer but are not good for the skin. By controlling what ingredients I use in my recipes, I am able to control what I’m putting on my skin– and yours!
Many natural products on the market lead you to believe they are all natural, but a quick scan of the ingredients will show that they are not. Why?
There are currently no rules on what can be labeled "natural" by the FDA. Any product that has at least 95% natural ingredients can be listed as "natural,” so non-natural fragrances and preservatives can sneak through without you knowing it!
At Tailored Touches, we strive to use only the best quality ingredients and as many all-natural ingredients as possible. We also use clear labeling to ensure you know what you’re getting!

- Products that are listed as "All Natural" have 100% natural ingredients.
- Products listed as "natural" have at least 95% natural ingredients and contain only a preservative to keep the product fresh or a fragrance oil to enhance the scent.
- Handcrafted soaps do not need a preservative because the process that turns the ingredients into “soap” uses up the water in the process.
- Oil-based products, such as a whipped body creams, lotion bars, or lip balms, need no preservatives since water is not present.
- Lotions, creams, and washes have water or aloe vera juice as main ingredients. While these are wonderful choices for the skin, they need a preservative!
Understanding Preservatives & How We Use Them
Any product that contains water must include some type of preservative system to ward off yeast, mold, fungi, and bacteria. I have painstakingly researched the preservatives I use to find the best fit for each recipe, and I never use more than 1.5%.
In any water-based products like lotions, I depend on Tinosan SDC, a silver-based antimicrobial. It is water-soluble silver citrate and effective in very small amounts (we use no more than 0.1 - 0.3%). It is formaldehyde-free, non-halogenated, and contains no phenols or parabens, making it a safe, all-natural preservative.

In mostly oil and some water based products, I turn to a naturally-derived preservative comprised of phenoxyethanol and sorbic acid: the Optiphen family of preservatives.

This preservative never comprises more than 1.5% of the total of ingredients in a product, and it is paraben-free and formaldehyde-free. On rare instances, if a recipe requires a lot of herbs or other botanical materials, I turn to an even broader preservative, Phenonip, to ensure the quality of the product, but again, I never use more than 1.5%.

Note on Skin Sensitivities
Please keep in mind that even though our products are made with high quality ingredients, some people may still experience skin sensitivities. Oils such as sweet almond or pistachio may cause reactions in people who are allergic to nuts. We recommend you do a skin patch test with new products! |

Fragrance or Flavor Oils
Fragrance oils replicate scents that cannot be obtained through natural means. They may be a combination of both a synthetically-derived scent and natural essential oils or just synthetic fragrance oil. The oils we use are skin-safe and are used in quantities below the safe levels recommended by the International Fragrance Association. All fragrance oils are phthalate-free and do not contain any CA Prop 65 reportable ingredients. |
